Burdock

When Anna Craig’s lover disappears, she hires hard nosed private eye Matt Burdock to locate the dork. Burdock finds the corpse with a cord wrapped around its neck. The ensuing investigation draws Burdock and Craig into an international intrigue that takes them from the streets of Toronto to the northern wilderness and forces each to consider whether the greater threat is the other or the killer. Abetting Burdock are Street Pete who “would have been a strapping handsome man if he was able to care for himself”, his ex-navy buddies Ptomaine Tony “whose bar food is the stuff city health inspectors are paid to eradicate” and Big Steve who “was with Tony and me when we cleared the bikers out of the bar in Halifax”, his high school chum Broker Bob who “was an advocate of conspicuous consumption, he bought a sixty foot cruiser but he was afraid of water so he preferred to cruise the bar,” and first wife Eleanor who “only showed up at the church to see if I would be there”. All do not survive.

Email: “What the President Just Did”

Earlier today, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell sent this message to the White House email list on President Obama's action to protect Bristol Bay. Didn't get it? Make sure you sign up for email updates here.

Just now, the President took action to protect a place called Bristol Bay, Alaska. Here's why that matters:

It places a national treasure — and one of the nation's most productive fisheries — off limits for oil and gas leasing. Alaskans have been fighting to preserve Bristol Bay for decades. Today, we got it done.

Bristol Bay helps to produce 40 percent of America's wild-caught seafood each year. It supports $ 2 billion every year in commercial fishing, and supports good jobs in sport-fishing and tourism.

These waters are beautiful and valuable, and today's action will ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy their bounty.

It's a big deal. Watch the President's announcement, and take a look at these photos of the place this Administration just took definitive action to protect:

This is Bristol Bay, Alaska, a national treasure that President Obama is protecting for all of us.

Obama To Speak On Relations With Cuba, Release Of Alan Gross

President Barack Obama will speak Wednesday on U.S. relations with Cuba, hours after American Alan Gross was released from Cuban prison, where he’d been for five years.

Gross was accompanied back to the U.S. by Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.). Three Cubans that had been jailed in the U.S. for spying, along with a U.S. intelligence source who had been jailed in Cuba for more than 20 years, were also released on Wednesday.

Several lawmakers were quick to criticize the release of the Cuban spies, including Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.).

“Trading Mr. Gross for three convicted criminals sets an extremely dangerous precedent,” Menendez said in a statement. “It invites dictatorial and rogue regimes to use Americans serving overseas as bargaining chips.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also criticized the spies’ release, saying during an interview on Fox News that it “sets a very dangerous precedent,” and calling the normalization of relations with Cuba “absurd.”

“This is going to do absolutely nothing to further human rights and democracy in Cuba,” Rubio told the AP earlier Wednesday. “But it potentially goes a long way in providing the economic lift that the Castro regime needs to become permanent fixtures in Cuba for generations to come.”

Officials said Wednesday that talks will begin to normalize full U.S.-Cuba diplomatic relations, according to the AP. The U.S. also will aim to open an embassy in Havana.

Obama spoke with Cuban President Raul Castro on Tuesday about normalizing relations.

Castro was also expected to make a statement on Wednesday.

Can We Embrace the Complexity of Mental Health?

A Recovering Therapist’s Perspective

It has not been easy to be a mental health therapist in the world these last several weeks, especially here in Saint Louis.

Hell, it hasn’t been easy to be human lately.

So much pain. So much violence. So much suffering. So much judgment. So much intolerance.

So much powerlessness.

And yet I believe in the power of forgiveness; of ourselves and others. I believe in the power of recovery. I believe in our abilities to heal. I believe in the power of connection and love. And, I really believe in the power of courage.

As a mental health therapist I have been educated, trained and my professional experience speaks to embracing all sides of everything. To not only seek understanding of all sides of everything but to also have empathy for all sides of everything.

Sometimes this can feel like a heavy burden to carry, especially when it comes to my personal life. It also means that I seek answers in many places and from many different angles. Such as in the case of the heartbreaking suicide of Robin Williams.

And, needless to say, many angles have been presented.

I have found myself frustrated and angered and I have found myself understood and thankful. Which I guess just brings us right back to that feeling, seeing and understanding all sides of everything.

But today in one of my sessions I was able to bring the many angles to light with one of my fellow survivors of anxiety and depression. And, within that light, I think and hope, I opened up enough space for all of us who struggle with anything to breathe a little easier.

I have depression

As a survivor of mental illness I have been paralyzed by the depths of depression. The kind that hurts your whole body. The kind that leaves you exhausted in every way imaginable. The kind that destroys friendships. The kind that hurts your schooling or work. The kind where nothing means anything and yet everything seems like too much. The kind that is so dark that you simply cannot see any light; where you don’t recognize yourself or anyone else for that matter. And, the kind that makes the impossible choice somehow seem like the only choice.

I can practice my recovery

As someone who practices recovery I know the choices I must make every day to acknowledge, embrace and treat my depression. The choice to take meds when I need them. The choice to really work in my therapy. The choice to practice self-care. The choice to embrace the dark, move through it and let it pass because on some days that feels like all I can do. And, the choice to do this all with wholehearted courage.

I am a therapist practicing recovery from depression

As a mental health therapist I understand the disease. I understand the causes, both environmental and genetic. I understand the chemical, emotional and spiritual make up of it. I understand that the disease is not a choice but fighting for recovery and holding onto hope is. And, I can understand that sometimes that choice just feels too difficult to make.

This understanding all sides of it sometimes feels like too much and even too confusing. Leaving me with several different voices in my head:

It’s not fair. Why do I have to suffer from depression? Why do I have to work so hard at just being okay? Why does it always linger somewhere in the background just waiting to cut off my light?

or

It’s too hard. I can’t keep trying. It never gets better. I am exhausted. I don’t want to fight any longer.

or

Just get out of bed. Just make the choices that make it better. Just take the meds. Just set a schedule. Just freaking do it. Just…

or

Yes, I have depression (or anxiety or addiction, etc.) and I have to choose to do these things every day to be the best version of myself. Some days are good and some days are rougher. I don’t need a reason or an excuse as to why I have depression. But, I can do the work to understand myself. Because this understanding will move me closer to who I am supposed to be and who I want to be.

and

Everything can and will pass. We are never really alone. And, love, light and hope are always there.

The last few months I have been plagued by opinions, judgments and the research coupled with my own experience as a sufferer, a survivor and a practitioner; with all of the voices above.

What I was able to understand today with my client was that maybe we can embrace that it is all just really complex. That most of the time we will never get the exact, sure-fire answer as to why or how. But, within that we can still understand.

We can still have compassion, for ourselves and others.

We can choose courage.

And, it is only through this compassion and courage that we can and will find our truth.

And, that this can be and is enough.

I promise.

The Migrant’s Table

The Migrant’s Table

To most of us the food that we associate with home our national and familial homes is an essential part of our cultural heritage. No matter how open we become to other cuisines, we regard home-cooking as an intrinsic part of who we are. In this book, Krishnendu Ray examines the changing food habits of Bengali immigrants to the United States as they deal with the tension between their nostalgia for home and their desire to escape from its confinements. As Ray says, ‘This is a story about rice and water and the violations of geography by history’. Focusing on mundane matters of immigrant life (for example, what to eat for breakfast in America), he connects food choices to issues of globalization and modernization. By showing how Bengali immigrants decide what defines their ethnic cuisine and differentiates it from American food, he reminds us that such boundaries are uncertain for all newcomers. By drawing on literary sources, family menus and recipes for traditional dishes, interviews with Bengali household members, and his own experience as an immigrant, Ray presents a vivid picture of immigrants grappling with the grave and immediate problem of defining themselves in their home away from home. Author note: Krishnendu Ray is Associate Professor of Liberal Arts and Management at the Culinary Institute of America.

First Lady Michelle Obama visited the patients at the Children’s National Medical Center today in Washington, D.C., continuing a tradition dating back more than 60 years to First Lady Bess Truman. First Dogs Bo and Sunny joined Mrs. Obama to help spread holiday cheer to the kids and their families.

After meeting with patients and doctors in the surgical care unit and with the infectious disease team, the First Lady sat down with Santa Claus to read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to a group of children gathered in the hospital's atrium.

CHILD: I knew it was Santa!

MRS. OBAMA: You knew it was Santa! It’s a Christmas story, who else would it be?

Senate May Confirm Up To 88 Federal Judges

WASHINGTON (AP) — No longer impeded by Republican blocking tactics, Democrats are on track to win confirmation of up to 88 of President Barack Obama’s top judicial nominations this year, a total that would be the highest for any president in two decades.

Last year, Democrats made it harder for Republicans to derail Obama’s nominations by weakening the Senate’s rule on filibusters. So far this year, the chamber has approved 76 federal court of appeals and district court judges, all of them lifetime appointments. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is hoping to confirm a dozen more before adjournment later this week — votes he is pushing with the knowledge that the Republicans who control the Senate next year will be less accommodating. Whatever this year’s figure, it will easily surpass the 43 approved last year and the 49 confirmed in 2012. It will also increase Obama’s imprint on the federal judiciary, though judges don’t always champion the political ideology of the president who picked them.

“He’s changed the face of the judiciary,” said Russell Wheeler, who studies the judiciary for the liberal-leaning Brookings Institution. “Whether or not that will have a long-term impact, I think, is another question.”

If the Senate confirms 88 of Obama’s judicial selections, that would be the highest number since a Democratic-led Senate approved 99 of President Bill Clinton’s appeals and district court nominees in 1994, according to Wheeler.

Several lawmakers said Democrats got a chance to consider more nominees than expected after conservatives led by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, forced a weekend vote on Obama’s executive actions deferring the deportation of millions of immigrants. They said that gave Reid more time to hold votes on nominations.

“I think most people would say yes to that. People make mistakes,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, adding, “I admire anybody who’s willing to stand up on the floor and make their case.”

Cruz spokesman Phil Novack disagreed that Cruz’s move gave Reid an opening, writing by email, “Everyone knows Harry Reid planned to jam forward as many nominees as he could.”

The 88 judges would mean the Senate would have confirmed 303 federal appeals and district court judges through Obama’s six years in office, according to Wheeler. That would be more than Clinton achieved over his first six years, 298.

That would leave just 50 federal appeals and district court vacancies out of 856 judgeships, according to data from the U.S. court system. That’s the lowest number of vacancies since December 2008, the month before Obama took office. Vacancies during his presidency peaked at 108 in December 2010.

Of Obama’s judges confirmed so far, 42 percent have been women, 19 percent black and 11 percent Hispanic, the White House said. That exceeded the percentages of his immediate predecessors, George W. Bush and Clinton, the White House said.

Another measure of Obama’s impact is on federal appeals courts, which have enormous influence on their regions of the country and can be conduits for cases to reach the Supreme Court. When he took office, 10 of the 13 appeals courts had more judges appointed by Republican than Democratic presidents. Now the balance has switched, with Democratic-appointed majorities on nine of the courts.

Most significantly, that includes the federal appeals court for the District of Columbia, considered the nation’s second-most powerful court because its jurisdiction includes actions by the White House and federal agencies.

6 Ways to Stress Less at Christmas

2014-12-12-IMG_0833.JPG
Do you feel a palpable build up in the weeks before Christmas? We often find it gets busier: meetings, catch-up coffees, deadlines, “I need to talk” phone calls. And then there’s the personal stuff: shopping for presents, getting the car serviced, sorting out holidays, family gatherings, friend gatherings. While it’s supposed to be a time of celebration and joy, many people also experience pressure and stress. So here are six tips to help you stress less, and slide into the season with a clear mind.

1. Don’t catch the deadline virus: Before you add something to your to-do list at this time of year, ask yourself why it must be done before Christmas. If there is no good answer, leave it until next year when you have fresh energy and renewed focus.

2. Avoid the perfection pitfall: Stress is the gap between expectations and reality. If you’re trying to create the perfect Christmas, you could be setting yourself up for stress rather than success! While it’s fine to have a vision driving your Christmas plans, hold that vision lightly. Reality brings real magic if you’re open to it.

3. Watch for weakened willpower: Willpower runs out throughout the day, and can be depleted by over-use. If you are testing your resolve with too many temptations, you could be setting yourself up for a blow-out! The silly season if often when healthy choices and good habits fall by the wayside. Make important decisions early in the day that will help you stay strong when temptation beckons.

4. Rev up your relationships: We often spend less time than we really want with the important people in our lives during the year, and Christmas offers an opportunity to reconnect. But simply having more time does not guarantee connection. So try these 3 simple exercises to ensure you do:
• Seven Second Hug: it’s self explanatory!
• Give 10 percent More Attention: quality and quantity
• Learn Something New: find out one new thing about those closest to you

5. Immaterial Matters: It is common knowledge that material goods don’t make anyone happy, so rather than succumbing to buying a gift that has no real meaning, ask yourself what inspires each person, then consider how to give them that inspiration in a creative way.

6. Being Present is the present : Attention is a precious gift. It’s the currency of care. In fact it is the only thing you really have to give of yourself to another person. So regardless of what else you get someone for Christmas, make sure you give a full dose of clear, open and uncluttered attention with it.

Wishing you and yours a happy and stress free Christmas!

Holiday, Shmoliday: What to Do When Christmas Feels Blue

The older I get, the more I realize what a mix of blessing and curse the holidays can be.

On one hand, there’s a sense of magic in the air… People are inclined to generously donate food and gifts. There are parties and gatherings at every turn. It’s easy to imagine that the snow is sparkling because of Christmas.

But there’s a shadow side happening at the same time. For the lonely and sad, the holidays are an occasion to feel even more isolated than usual. For the stressed and sick, the holidays ramp up the pressure. For those who are struggling financially, it’s easy to feel even more marginalized.

And there are plenty of folks who just feel blue, but can’t pinpoint why.

So how do you navigate this time with a little more ease, grace and holiday spirit? And how can you be more supportive of those around you who are experiencing their own ups and downs?

1. First, take notice.

How are you feeling? What’s going on in your life? Slow down and give yourself time and space to notice how you feel (which might be very different than how others expect you to feel). Real life doesn’t stop just because everyone around you seems to be celebrating.

Recognize that it’s as normal to feel blue during this time of year as at any other time. If there’s someone in your life who’s sad or struggling, acknowledge their sadness and give a listening ear.

You don’t have to “fix” your friend, solve their problems, or give advice to be helpful. In fact, if you simply listen – no advice, no judgment — you’ll be giving them a priceless gift: that of being seen, heard, and understood. This alone does wonders for the soul.

2. Feel what you feel.

How many times do we just soldier on despite feeling like our heart just isn’t there? This is an opportunity to slow down and pay attention to what’s really happening within.

Get really clear about what’s bothering you. Let yourself feel into it, while at the same time observing yourself from a distance. This can help you process how you feel without getting stuck or drowning in your feelings.

3. Find a “people balance.”

For many introverts (myself included), the tendency is to cocoon and hibernate when loneliness sets in. We want our comforts, and that includes alone time. But too much alone time quickly leads to isolation; the longer we spend in our own company, the harder it gets to reach out and connect with other people.

For extroverts, it’s easy to adopt a pattern of constant motion and activity to avoid feeling anything. The second you slow down, you feel, and that can be painful. But what happens when you wear yourself out with activity? You end up exhausted by the time those feelings creep into your awareness, and they feel even bigger and meaner than they otherwise would have.

For both introverts and extroverts, the key is to recognize your own tendency, and plan ahead for a little more or less social time. Do it when you’re rested, well nourished, and able to think clearly.

4. Take extra-good care.

Self-care is sorely devalued these days… As much as we say we need it and love having some extra TLC, we barely even give ourselves enough hours of sleep at night to feel well-rested and fully present the next day.

Like the stock market, the best way to successfully navigate the rush of the holidays is to do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. Instead of “Buy low, sell high,” adopt the motto: “Slow down when it’s busy, get busy when life slows down.”

Jumping on the crazy-busy bandwagon sets you up for exhaustion, frustration, rushing, mistakes, and miscommunication…. Certainly not the way to experience the joyful, loving spirit of the holidays!

But slow yourself down when everyone else is going at top speed, and you give yourself room to make better choices. It’s easier to spend your time more selectively, with people who lift you up. You have more patience and energy to handle unexpected situations and family emergencies. You feel more rested, in control, and grounded. Just because most people don’t associate the holiday season with peacefulness doesn’t mean you can’t!

5. Be honest if you’re not feeling better.

Of course if your melancholy goes beyond simple holiday blues, be sure to find a counselor, therapist, or other professional who can support you properly. Don’t put off getting the help you need and deserve.

Above all, remember that to be human means bumping up against other humans, asking for what you need, and helping other people to get what they need, too… not just today, but every day.

Brinksmanship and the Return of Financial Crisis

A government shutdown once again loomed, and familiar deadlines and ultimatums flew around Washington. And Congress just used the threat to loosen the rules created in the wake of the financial crisis, a victory for Wall Street banks in their constant and well-funded campaign against reform.

The rules they have targeted are designed to reduce the risk of another financial meltdown, like the one that drove us into the Great Recession and could have been much worse. Though the repeal has been styled by some as a technical amendment, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Think about the best way to decide legislative policy in the devilishly complex and risk-laden area of derivatives. These are the financial contracts that brought down AIG, the event that triggered the crisis. You might imagine careful deliberation and debate, leading to a thoughtful vote in Congress in which elected representatives must stand up and be counted so that they could be held responsible for a difficult decision.

Of course, that is not how the House of Representatives works, especially not the current lame duck version. A 1,600 page Omnibus Spending Bill appeared Tuesday night and passed the House late on Thursday night. We have become familiar with these spending bills  that have replaced reasoned budgeting and serially risk shutdowns just so the administration can be bullied every few months.

This time around, House sponsors attached a provision amending the Dodd-Frank financial reform law. They did this in the dead of night and at the last minute. Lobbyists, who are paid to make certain that the banks can continue to do as much risky business as possible despite the new regulatory regime, pushed to have a provision repealing the “swaps push-out” section of Dodd-Frank slipped into the spending bill so that any resistance to the repeal would risk another shutdown. Citigroup lobbyists wrote 70 out of 85 lines of the original bill.

That’s Washington style representative democracy for you.

The swaps push-out provision requires banks to transact their swaps business in separate subsidiaries. The concept is that any bank swaps business  should be done outside the bank itself, which is backed by FDIC deposit insurance and the many supports provided by the Federal Reserve.

Swaps are complex derivatives contracts requiring payments in the future that change as markets prices for stocks, bonds, oil and many other traded assets change. Thus, they create large and volatile financial obligations going back and forth between a bank and its contract “counterparty,” either a company (like AIG), a government or another bank.

Counterparties to the banks who rely on the banks’ performance of its obligations can rely on these federal supports and can assume that the government will step in if a problem occurs. This can embroil the government in any bank default making a bailout more likely, good news for bank creditors like the swap counterparties. To avoid this, the swaps push-out requires a separate corporation, not entitled to the federal supports, to create a firewall, insulating taxpayers from the riskiest trading.

Though swaps were regulated in Dodd-Frank, there were plenty of loopholes, so a great deal of that business will go forward just as before. The swaps push-out section now under threat was already watered down in the original Dodd-Frank deliberations. Nonetheless, it still provides important protection. With swaps push-out, there’s some possibility that the federal government wouldn’t be dragged into a bank default because of the bank safety net.

But members of Congress, urged on by big money from Wall Street, decided that this sensible buffer between casino-like derivatives trading and the American taxpayer was such a bad idea that it had to be discarded through surreptitious and disguised means.

The banks have been out to kill the swaps push-out from the beginning. That makes sense for them since the capital needed to back a subsidiary would cost them more than their basic capital. Banks can raise general capital cheaply since investors have learned that failure is not a concern for banks that are too-big-to-fail. Capital funding for a subsidiary that is separated from this safety net is more costly because a bail out is less likely.

The banks also got some of their customers who often enter into swaps with the banks to urge repeal. The customers complained that their swaps would cost more. Of course they would, since the bank subsidiary’s capital backing the swaps would cost more. But the customers, as contract counterparties, have been relying on the too-big-to-fail safety net. Like investors in the banks, these customers simply should not benefit from a pipeline to the American taxpayers. Any additional cost is an element of elimination of that benefit, nothing more.

In Washington, banks have been allowed to set the terms of the regulatory debate. The financial crisis provides many lessons, but one of its central was that allowing banks free reign leads to disastrous results for all Americans. Six years after the onset of the financial crisis, it’s too soon to forgot that lesson and revive too-big-to-fail.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

5 Ways to Fight Loneliness Over the Holidays

The holidays come sprinkled with promises of “brightness” and “cheer.” It’s a universally meaningful time for millions of people, and I would argue that this sense of connectedness is a large part of what makes the season seem sort of magical. Yet for many people, the winter months don’t always live up to their heartwarming reputation. According to a study for American Psychological Association, 26 percent of people feel lonely over the holidays and 38 percent reported an increase in stress.

A lot of people aren’t able to make it home to see their loved ones. Others are enclosed by herds of relatives and still feel a sense of isolation. No matter what your situation, it is NOT uncommon to feel lonely in these months. Going home can stir up emotions we’ve swept under the rug or may not even be aware of. We’re often swung back into settings where a lot of complex memories took place. Some may be joyful but others are painful.

Many children feel lonely or outcast at some point in their development. In many homes, kids are seen by their parents or early caretakers as good, bad, sharp, slow, burdensome, worrisome, disappointing or destined for greatness. These labels and expectations can hurt us in conscious and unconscious ways throughout our development. When we’re thrown back into that childhood setting, or around people we grew up with, we sometimes feel like kids again on the inside, re-experiencing old feelings or just not feeling ourselves. Dr. Dan Siegel refers to this phenomenon as “getting lost in familiar places.” This vulnerability is all the more reason to practice self-compassion and to be wary of old familiar hurtful ways we can think about ourselves. With that in mind, here are a few strategies that can help you stay yourself at the close of your year and on into the next.

1. Stop expecting perfection

Many of us tend to have a picture in our heads of what the ideal holiday should be. We expect it to be as perfectly polished as the shiny ornaments that surround us. The frenzied build up inherently sets us up for a certain amount of letdown. This is particularly observable in children. After Thanksgiving, my nieces confessed to me that they actually felt a little depressed following our family’s annual festivities. Thanksgiving is a big deal in our house. We get dressed up, and our big, extended family celebrates the way one would a wedding or gala. The whole day brings a lot of happiness, but much of that is in the preparation: cooking together, setting the tables, posting a large tent in our yard. After that, the kids felt the evening itself just went by too quickly. No matter how great everything turned out, it couldn’t quite live up to the excitement they’d felt.

This is a feeling a lot of people have about everything from presents to interactions with family members. “Maybe old wounds will finally heal, and all we will feel is warmth and love.” We have a fantasy of everything going smoothly, which leaves us all the more crushed when there turn out to be bumps in the road. Try to take pleasure in the little things without attaching too much weight to things you can’t control or that don’t have that much to do with the life you’ve created for yourself in the present.

2. Stop evaluating

The close of a year tends to be a time of reflection. We may feel a natural sadness that comes with both our losses and our gains. However, there is a fine line between self-reflection and self-evaluation. It’s one thing to look back on our year with curiosity and an interest in any changes we’d make in the future. It’s another thing to beat ourselves up over our shortcomings and to judge ourselves like a cold critic scrutinizing a performance.

With so many social gatherings, it’s easy to start comparing ourselves to others:

Everyone is in a relationship. Why are you still alone? It’s so humiliating!

Look how successful he is. You’ll never have an important career.

She is so together. You’re such a mess.

You don’t fit in anywhere. You’re just different.

These “critical inner voices” make up an ongoing dialogue that reinforces the basic belief that we are not good enough. This inner critic makes us feel worthless and unlike others in some negative sense. It encourages us to be alone, then disparages us for being a loner. It contributes to our loneliness by constantly reminding us we are unworthy of the life we desire and by alienating us from those we care about.

Get to know this inner critic, because the more we can separate our real selves from its destructive point of view, the better off we will be. Because this inner critic started forming early in our lives based on ways we were seen in our family, expect it to get a little louder when we enter settings from our past. Stay determined in your mission to ignore this cruel coach, and don’t listen to its awful advice. Remember it is not a representation of who you really are and will only work to sabotage you.

3. Spend time with your family of choice

During the holidays, you may feel obligated to spend time with certain people who don’t make you feel that great. Whether you choose to do that or not, it’s valuable to set aside some time to be with your family-of-choice. This can be an intimate group of friends, your kids, your partner or anyone who makes you feel good and more in touch with yourself. Carve out time for the people, places and activities that make you feel the most like you, the people who make you laugh, think or feel in ways that are meaningful to you.

4. Volunteer

If you’re far away from the people you care about or are feeling disconnected, seek out scenes in which you’re sharing something, even with complete strangers. Volunteering is one of the best things you can do for yourself when you’re feeling down. It forces you to think outside yourself and share a project with others. Think of a cause that matters to you and take some time to be a part of it. Generosity offers a natural way for us to feel good about ourselves. Plus, being part of a team instantly creates a sense of camaraderie over a shared concern.

5. Stay in the moment, even when it makes you sad

Sometimes, it takes being in a room full of people to make us feel our most alone. No matter how many people we pack into the car with us to take to the party, every one of us is our own unique individual person, living and breathing on our own. We all have moments, where we feel a sense of our profound aloneness. When we contemplate our existence, we can expect it to stir us up. The sense of time passing, which can be brought about by a year ending, is always a sobering realization.

Not every moment will be filled with joy, and even those that are can carry with them a certain amount of poignancy at life’s preciousness. New Year’s reminds us of years past. It shines light on the faces of those we’ve lost. It tells us we are older, maybe wiser and far more aware that time isn’t something we can grip. We don’t have to sink with this feeling. We are better off letting ourselves feel whatever we feel. Sadness can come in waves, and when it passes, we’re often left with a sense of peace and vitality. When we try to drown it out we wind up also numbing ourselves to the many pleasures life brings.

Too often, we distract ourselves from these deeper feelings by busying our minds with worries or critical inner voices. When a negative thought starts to take flight, like a balloon released from the bunch, try not to drift away with it. Gently bring yourself back to the moment. Then shift your focus outward. Think about what you could offer; this will take you out of your head.

Staying in the moment won’t spare us from any feelings of sadness or loneliness, but it encourages us to practice patience and self-compassion. It helps us to feel whatever is really going on in our lives. If we sense that our inner critic is taking over, luring us into self-destructive behaviors, we can kindly bring our attention back to what is important to us. We can take actions that reconnect us to our experiences and the people around us. We can open our eyes to possibilities and consciously create the holiday that will mean something to us.

The Best Way To Handle Your Family Dysfunction (VIDEO)

For many of us, our most dysfunctional relationships are with the people we love most, our family members. Progressive spiritual leader Rob Bell, bestselling author of Love Wins, discusses how to handle the destructive skeletons hiding in your family’s closet in this exclusive clip from the premiere of “The Rob Bell Show” on OWN.

“Families always have a bunch of rules about how things are operated,” Bell says. “But here’s the problem with families: no one ever writes the rules down. Correct? So all we know is there’s a bunch of rules about what we can say and what we can’t say, what’s permissible and what’s not. But no one ever wrote down how the thing works.”

As a kid, you just pick up on these unspoken rules, he says. But as an adult, you may no longer agree. “This is my blood, this is my tribe, this is my family — yeah, but they’re all crazy,” Bell says. “I love them, but there is dysfunction.”

Once you recognize that you’re in an unhealthy situation, Bell says it’s time to start creating boundaries. “And what’s really hard sometimes for people is to hold in one hand, ‘these are my family, this is my tribe, I love them,’ but there’s also toxic, destructive things here that I can’t participate in.” The key, he says, is to balance both.

So this holiday season, when you’re find yourself smack in the middle of family drama, remember: you can love your family while keeping your distance, too.

“The Rob Bell Show” airs Sunday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on OWN.
